Men
do not generally take very good care of their skin and one of the biggest
reasons is the fact that they do not know what skin type they have.
Your skin is the body's biggest organ and a crucial defence against bacterial infection. It reacts to the sun, pollution, medications, stress and a variety of other influences. Knowing what your personal skin type under ideal conditions is, will help you in choosing the perfect product for your needs.
Normal Skin
Normal skin is never too oily or too dry. Pimples are very rare.
Pores are small. The skin has an even tone and is moderately thick, smooth
and firm with excellent elasticity and moisture.
Stick with a daily cleanse-tone-moisturise routine for your face and a wash-scrub-moisturise for the rest of your body and you will have fantastic skin
Oily skin
Oily skin is typically thicker and firmer than normal skin with less
sensitivity to chemicals, detergents or perfumes. Pores are medium to large in
size which sometimes become clogged causing blackheads, whiteheads or blemishes.
Try a glycolic facial cleanser followed by an oil-free face lotion every morning after you shower. Use an oil-free body cleansing gel when you bathe. Avoid cheap, mass-market soaps. Scrub every other day and use a face mask at least once a week.
Tone after exercise or when you have been sweating. Use an astringent aftershave instead of a shave balm. Avoid all-over body moisturisers.
Dry skin
Dry skin is usually thin, dull, easily irritated and rough to touch.
Treat dry skin as you would normal skin and if there is no improvement, see a
dermatologist as this may be a sign of a mild skin disease.
Sensitive skin
Sensitive skin suffers moderate to severe reactions to the sun, wind,
temperature extremes, cheap shaving creams, perfumed soaps, fragrances and
alcohol-based deodorants amongst other things.
Be careful which products you use. Even 100% natural products may provoke a reaction. Try shaving gel instead of shaving cream. Use an aftershave balm containing a low SPF sun protection if you are out in the sun. Wash with a glycerine-based soap and avoid fragrances. Use a good hand and body lotion to protect your skin from the elements. If you do react to any products, discontinue their use immediately.
Combo skins
Combination skin refers to the skin on your face. Most combo skin
consists of an oily forehead, nose and chin with dry cheeks and eye areas.
Treat each zone according to the advice given above and use a face mask twice to four times a month.
Problem skin
The pores on your face are very large. When you squeeze them, a fatty
discharge is pushed out. Your skin is very oily and prone to bad acne or
outbreaks of blackheads and blemishes. If you haven't already done so, see a
dermatologist as you probably require prescription medication.
If you are already using medicated soaps or medicines, do not squeeze or pick at the acne. Avoid things that can aggravate your skin problems and use protective clothing or sunscreens when required.
